If you’ve had veneers or thinking about getting them, it’s safe to assume it’s the top teeth in play. So what about the bottom teeth?

A common question that we get asked in the initial consultation is whether or not the bottom teeth need to be veneered as well.

Scenario 1: The bottom teeth are stained, crooked and crowded…

If you’re getting porcelain veneers on the top teeth, you don’t necessarily need to get the bottom teeth veneered, even if the bottom teeth are stained, crooked and crowded. The reason being is that everyone’s top teeth shows a lot more compared to the bottom teeth.

Scenario 2: The bottom teeth are stained and yellow…

Another question I get asked is the colour contrast between the top and the bottom teeth. Generally speaking, our top teeth are naturally whiter in colour compared to our bottom teeth. Where it would look weird is if your bottom teeth were whiter than the top teeth. Therefore having the top teeth slightly whiter than that the bottom teeth is acceptable aesthetically.

Scenario 3: What if I were to choose to get super white porcelain veneers on the top teeth?

In this case if you choose blindingly whiter porcelain veneers then we would recommend to get the bottom teeth veneered.

What can we do for the bottom teeth as an alternative to porcelain veneers?

• We can do in-chair teeth whitening for the bottom teeth to brighten up the colour. We recommend to get the bottom teeth whitening twice per year.
• We can do some light recontouring of the teeth

If we were to get porcelain veneers, how many porcelain veneers would we recommend?

If you were to get the bottom teeth veneered as well, we generally recommend to get 6-8 porcelain veneers. However the number of veneers we would recommend to get would depend on how many of the bottom teeth shoe when you smile and talk as well as trying to target your budget.

The bottom line is:

If you can afford it, it’s a bonus, but it’s not a deal breaker to get porcelain veneers done for the bottom teeth.
