Start our Q & A about Microdermabrasion Treatments
What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a quick, non-invasive skin treatment, ideal for cleansing, refining and smoothing the skins surface.
Using a diamond-tipped suction machine the procedure removes the surface layer of dead skin and stimulates healthy vital reactions in the deeper layers of the skin, resulting in soft and hydrated skin that glows.
How does microdermabrasion work?
Microdermabrasion is a gentle exfoliating treatment that removes layers of dead and damaged skin, revealing a smoother, fresher complexion.
Performed by a hand-held wand that features an exfoliating diamond tip, the wand is passed over the skin 2-3 times drawing in air which creates a vacuum when the wand touches the skin.
As the exfoliating tip of the wand passes across the skin’s surface, it picks up dead surface skin cells along the way, unclogging pores, removing dry skin, increasing circulation and refining the skin’s texture.
Does microdermabrasion hurt? Is microdermabrasion safe?
Microdermabrasion treatment is a painless and completely safe procedure. The procedures is customised to your skin type and because it’s not an invasive treatment, it requires no downtime.
Sessions can be scheduled at any time of the day, allowing you to get back to your normal activities in no time. Treatments are comfortable with a slight tingling sensation, the sensation of a good exfoliation.
A slightly sun burnt sensation is experienced for a short time afterwards.
How many microdermabrasion treatments do I need to get the best results?
A minimum series of three treatments is recommended for best results for skin rejuvenation.
As the skin is constantly renewing itself, we recommend that most clients return on a regular basis to keep their skin looking its best.
Many clients return every 1-3 months. The frequency of treatments can be decided as part of your treatment plan in our Bentleigh skin clinic.
Is microdermabrasion safe for all skin types?
Where can microdermabrasion be used?
What should I expect from my microdermabrasion treatment?
Generally, a session of microdermabrasion of the face takes approximately 20 minutes. It is not painful and it may feel like you are having a facial.
Prior to microdermabrasion, your face is thoroughly cleansed. The microdermabrasion head is then systematically passed over the face multiple times. Particular creams or serums are put on your face after the procedure has been completed.
After microdermabrasion, your skin may appear red and this usually persists for a short time only and you will notice that your skin feels soft and smooth afterwards.
We recommend 3-6 sessions at fortnightly to monthly intervals to ahieve the best results. Ultimately, the number and frequency of microdermabrasion will depend on the skin type of the client as well as their needs.
How long does microdermabrasion take?
What is the benefit of combining microdermabrasion with a chemical peel?
The problem with microdermabrasion and chemical peels is that they can only interact with the skin so much. When combined, they can significantly provide a more effective treatment.
Also when combined they reduce the risk of unwanted side effects. Clients typically see clearer skin when they undergo both treatments rather than only one.
The other advantage of combining chemical peels with microdermabrasion treatments is the fact that the recovery period between treatments is typically shorter. This allows you to minimise redness and swelling while still enjoying smooth and clear skin.
What does microdermabrasion feel like?
Microdermabrasion feels like tiny sand-like particles running across your face; a strange sensation for first timers but by no means painful. Your face feels warm and pink afterwards for a few hours.
Who is microdermabrasion for?
Microdermabrasion provides exceptional results for the following conditions:
- fine lines and wrinkles
- sun-damaged skin
- acne and acne scars
- oily skin
- blackheads and whitehead
- enlarged and open pores
- age spots
- dull and congested skin
- suitable for all skin types
What can I expect after my microdermabrasion treatment?
The skin might be slightly red afterwards for a few hours. Mild shedding of the skin is common in the first few days. We advise you not to pick any flakiness caused from the treatment, as this can cause scarring. After a few days, you will notice a visible improvement with the skin looking smoother and fresher.
What is the difference between microdermabrasion and dermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive treatment that removes only the surface layer of dead skin, while dermabrasion is an invasive procedure that removes several layers of skin at once. This often requires a general or local anaesthetic, and leaves skin red, swollen and extremely sensitive for up to 2 weeks.
Microdermabrasion is a much milder treatment and is painless with minimal side-effects but still powerful and effective in skin exfoliation.
What is the difference between crystal and diamond microdermabrasion machines?
There are two types of microdermabrasion machines: one that use micro-crystals to abrade the skin, and the other uses with a laser cut diamond tip wand.
The diamond tip wand allows areas closer to the eyes and mouth to be treated more accurately, while the crystal machine has a limited scope, due to the possibility of crystals getting into the eyes and causing damage.
Diamond tip machines are also gentler to the skin, and result in a more precise treatment.
Can I go back to work after my microdermabrasion treatment?
Are microdermabrasions the same as a regular facial?
Microdermabrasions are different to a regular facial, as they use active skin care products and advanced technology to exfoliate the dull, dead, outer surface of the skin, leaving it clear, bright and purified.
Most notably, microdermabrasion treatments feature the use of diamond-tipped machines and vacuum suction to extract debris from your pores and collect dead skin.
What is the difference between microdermabrasion and chemical peels?
Both treatments are considered to be a form of exfoliation. Exfoliation is the act of removing dead skin cells from the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin.
The easiest way to maintain healthy skin is by keeping it free and clear of dead skin cells – making exfoliation critical to your regular skincare routine.
The difference between microdermabrasion and chemical peels is that they are two different types of exfoliation: microdermabrasion is a physical exfoliation, while chemical peels are a chemical exfoliation.
