Material Conscious Dentistry

Low Tox Dentistry

We believe many everyday products contain ingredients that are not essential to effective dental care. Wherever possible we aim to reduce unnecessary chemical exposures while maintaining the highest standards of safety, hygiene and clinical outcomes.

Clinical Environment

We believe a welcoming and comfortable environment is an important part of the dental experience.

Air Quality

We consider indoor air quality when creating our clinical environment. Our clinic incorporates:

  • HEPA air purifiers in treatment rooms
  • Minimal use of synthetic fragrances
  • Good ventilation throughout the clinic

Water Quality

Filtered drinking water is available for patients and families throughout their visit.

Sound & Music

We understand that the sounds of a dental clinic can influence how patients experience their appointments. That’s why we play calming lo fi music throughout the clinic, with gentle tones and slower rhythms to help create a relaxed atmosphere.

Dental Materials & Products

We believe patients should have access to information about the materials used in their dental treatments.

We consider material composition, manufacturer information and individual clinical needs when selecting dental products.

Dental Filling Materials

We use BPA free composite filling materials, supported by manufacturer documentation. We also consider information about material composition, including the presence of BPA related compounds such as Bis GMA and Bis DMA. Our material selection is guided by clinical suitability, available product information and individual patient needs.

Dental Anaesthetics

We take an interest in the ingredients and composition of the anaesthetic products used in our clinic. Our approach includes:

  • Custom compounded topical numbing gel prepared by a local compounding pharmacy
  • Requesting ingredient information from anaesthetic suppliers
  • Selecting anaesthetic products according to individual clinical requirements

Low Tox Floss

We use dental floss that is PFAS and PTFE free, supported by manufacturer documentation. We consider material composition when selecting floss and other oral care products for use in our clinic.

Lip Care

Rather than conventional petroleum based lip products, we use Egyptian Magic as part of our patient lip care experience. This product is formulated without petroleum, added synthetic fragrances, parabens or conventional preservatives. We select patient care products with consideration for their ingredients, intended use and suitability.

Oral Care Products

We offer a selection of oral care products to accommodate different patient needs and preferences. Our range includes:

  • Fluoride free toothpaste
  • SLS free toothpaste
  • Non nano hydroxyapatite toothpaste
  • Naturally flavoured oral care products
  • Products without artificial colours
  • Selected dental floss and oral hygiene accessories
We recognise that oral care needs vary between individuals. Our clinicians can discuss appropriate product options based on each patient’s oral health and risk factors.

Our Product Selection Philosophy

The products we recommend or stock are selected with consideration for their ingredients, material composition, intended purpose and relevance to oral health. We review available product information and encourage patients to make informed choices about their oral care routines.

Our Approach to Everyday Clinical Products

Beyond restorative materials, we also consider the everyday products used throughout our dental appointments.

Gloves

We use powder free nitrile gloves, including accelerator free options. Glove selection takes into account clinical requirements, product composition and individual sensitivities.

Professional Dental Cleans

We take an individualised approach to professional dental cleaning. Traditional prophy paste is not routinely used during our dental cleans. Instead, we select cleaning and polishing techniques according to each patient’s clinical needs. Our approach allows us to consider the products used during appointments while maintaining appropriate professional cleaning standards.

Mouthwash Rinses

We do not routinely ask patients to rinse with conventional flavoured mouthwashes during their appointments. Mouthwash use is considered according to individual clinical requirements rather than being included automatically.

Disposable Dental Bibs

We do not routinely use disposable dental bibs during appointments. This reflects our consideration of single use materials and waste within the clinical environment. Appropriate infection prevention and control measures remain central to our clinical procedures.

Patient Comfort & Wellness

We believe that thoughtful dental care extends beyond the treatment itself.

Our clinic environment includes carefully selected amenities intended to create a welcoming and comfortable experience.

Patient Amenities

Our amenities include:

  • Selected hand wash products
  • Hand creams chosen with consideration for their ingredients
  • Comfort items and relaxation options

Wellness Gifts

Depending on availability, patients may receive selected oral care or wellness products. Examples include:

  • Oral probiotics
  • Fluoride free toothpaste
  • BPA free electric toothbrush heads
  • Beeswax candies
  • Organic loose leaf tea
  • Selected skincare products
These items are provided as part of our patient experience and do not replace individualised dental advice or treatment.

Our Philosophy

Considered Materials. Informed Choices.

At Dental + Skin Clinic, our material conscious approach reflects our interest in understanding the products and materials used throughout the dental experience.

We believe patients should feel comfortable asking questions about dental materials, product ingredients and available treatment options.

Our goal is to provide transparent information and individualised care while maintaining appropriate clinical, safety and infection prevention standards.

We recognise that all dental materials and products have potential benefits, limitations and risks.

Our treatment recommendations are guided by individual clinical needs, professional judgement and available scientific evidence.

Important Information

The term “material conscious” describes our clinic’s approach to considering dental materials, products and ingredients. It is not a recognised dental specialty and does not imply that our treatments or materials are free from risk or inherently safer than those used in other dental practices.

Product descriptions, including BPA free, PFAS free and PTFE free, are based on available manufacturer documentation. Material suitability and treatment recommendations are assessed according to individual clinical circumstances.
